After numerous false starts with making an active tumblr I’ve decided that this time I will follow it through. Last week our lecturers asked us to make a declaration on the type of photographer we want to be. Some people struggled with this difficult decision and although the answer wasn’t a binding agreement, to only shoot that genre/style of photography. It did help in narrowing the field of options that people would like to pursue in our first full semester long project.
I am an everyday photographer and I inspire to one day reach the level of Stephen Shore or William Eggleston. I wish to use the concept of taking photographs everyday to inspire or generate ideas for other work. I like the idea of taking random shots when I like and these leading onto an expansive piece of work if I wish. I believe that college has taught me to believe that one off photographs are not a good thing and that you need a series to make anything worthwhile. I can see the logic in this but I think that caused me to steer away from taking one of shots, which in turn stopped me taking photos without a theory behind what I was doing. Right now I just like taking photos, some are continuation of ongoing projects. Others are just one of shots of how I see the world.
Since I started College I’ve taken a photo a day. I did this all through first year and 2nd year. I decided to use this catalogue of photos as my archive project at the end of 2nd year. Then I made a very poor decision in taking a break from doing this over the Summer. This made me lazy and made me blind to interesting photographic opportunities. While I slowly regain my vision and embrace the medium of photography again, I feel that 3rd year isn’t as daunting and since we’re finally allowed to be in control fully of the direction of our projects. I feel I’m proactively seeking the best method and direction forward instead of hoping for help/direction from my tutors. I feel I’m at a stage in my photography where I can make a decision and be confident about it.
